What is open order?

An open order is a sales order or purchase order that hasn’t yet been fully shipped, received or closed. The open order report, a list of every open order with its dates and status, is the daily worklist for CSRs on the sales side and buyers on the purchasing side.

How it works

Open sales orders include orders waiting to be picked, backorders and future-dated orders. Open purchase orders show what is on order from suppliers and when it is due. The total value of open sales orders is also called the backlog.

Open order example

Each morning a CSR sorts the open order report by promised date. Three orders promised for today haven’t been picked, so she calls the warehouse before the trucks are loaded.
